House Cleaning in The Heights

The Heights runs along the top of the Palisades between Palisade Avenue and Kennedy Boulevard, and most of what people live in up here was built long before anyone owned a vacuum. Wood-frame Victorian two- and three-families line the side streets, pre-war walk-ups cluster around Riverview, and gut-renovated floor-throughs keep appearing a block or two off Central Avenue. Each of those buildings collects dirt in its own way, so a house cleaning plan has to match the building rather than a generic checklist.

In the Victorians it is the woodwork. Oak floors, pocket doors, built-in cabinets and stair balusters all hold dust in their grooves, and the cast-iron radiators under the bay windows send it back into the room every time the heat cycles on. A visit that only wipes the flat surfaces leaves one of these houses looking clean for about a day.

The renovated condos have the opposite problem. Quartz counters, matte fixtures and new white oak show every fingerprint and water spot, so a clean that would pass in an older house reads as streaky here. Add the fine drywall dust that keeps surfacing for months after a renovation and the unit needs a light, steady rhythm rather than an occasional scrub.

Then there is the street. Almost everyone parks on the block, so from December through March the front hall and the first run of stairs take salt and slush from every trip to the car, and a humid Hudson County summer leaves a film in the small tiled bathrooms these houses were built with.
